Brandon British Legion v Sunderland Hylton CW

Venue: Deerness Heights Field, Brandon, Durham DH7 8TQ.
Kickoff: 14:00 Sat 17 Aug 2013
Weather: intermittent showers, overcast, windy, mild

LOCATION REPORT

FOR SPECTATORS

SatNav: DH7 8TQ (from Brandon Lane, turn into Midhill Close)
Staff: none (venue), just team members/match officials
Parking: carpark at rear of Brandon Community Hall, 20 spaces, probably full if Hall in use but wasn't when I visited; roadside grass verge on Midhill Close, park on tarmac if muddy. This is a family housing estate, so show respect to residents.
Public transport: #49/#49a bus, Durham-Sawmills Estate, stops on Brandon Lane/Community Hall, 20m away.

Refreshments: zero. No shops immediately nearby.
Toilets: none (but it's a short walk via the footpath to Brandon United clubhouse in an emergency).
Weather protection:
Rain: open playing field but surrounded by large trees
Wind: not bad actually, the trees are pretty leafy (but maybe less good in depths of winter?), and there's thick bushes or allotment walls on other sides
Sun: minimal, just the shade of the branches on the south side
Cold: zero (Note: it'll be freezing in winter!)

FOR PLAYERS

Pitch: grass, bit bobbly (but what do you expect from an open field?), perhaps not good enough condition to play clever football on the ground
Floodlights: none. Location surrounded by high trees, so not ideal for evening games in winter or gloomy weather.
Changing: (t)rusty old portacabin! Host volunteers kept an eye on any belongings.

MATCH REPORT

Approx crowd inc casual passers-by: 41 at highest (every time it chucked down then a few left), 20+ stayed throughout...inc several kids (one toddler did a great job as ballboy) and 2 well-behaved dogs.
Note: there's a park adjacent with kids slides etc.

Full-time score [h/t] (colours):
1 [?] Brandon British Legion (claret/blue)
5 [?] Hylton CW (green, white [away kit])

Bookings (whilst I was there): 0
Sent Off: 0

NORVENMUNKI's COMMENTS:
Good craic amongst teams and their entourage. Plenty of kids, WAGs and grandparents... actually quite a nice family atmosphere.
True park-knockabout experience.
Any hefty clearance saw the ball disappear into the trees or the adjacent bowling green. I myself had to rescue a ball from the bushes because nobody else saw where it went!
The short showers were annoying (in fact, four lads stayed inside their car which was parked on the touchline).

GBA rating: Unlikely. But my son's best friend lives close by, so perhaps we'll all go the park sometime and have a kickabout? (You can't do that at Old Trafford).
