Hello again, football
The World Cup in Russia is a distant memory now, but the beautiful game doesn't lie dormant for long. As those global superstars return from luxury holidays and prepare for more top-flight adulation, the glorious world of non-league is already gearing up: step up thousands of hardy, similarly obsessive individuals to carry the great tradition into another season.
The sun is pouring down again today and the warm summer of 2018 continues to surprise and delight. What better conditions could there be for a day out at the footie?
Hello Step 6
I'm back on my Quest through the levels sous-92 and have reached the dizzy heights of Step 6 - namely the Northern Football League Division Two.
At this level, there will be no more open fields, only grounds that meet the League entry criteria. There'll (hopefully) be somewhere to escape the dodgy weather; there'll be food and drink; there'll be more than just me in the crowd!
So, what are we waiting for? Let's get cracking!
Note on the blog format
As we move up the leagues, I've decided to change the format of the blogs.
Basically, unlike previously when I tried to summarise what was happening on the pitch, there will be limited match reporting as such from now on. I came to this conclusion, quite happily, given that because we're getting higher up the pyramid and the profile of games is greater to the general public, these kinds of reports already exist in excellent form elsewhere, so there's little point in me repeating them from my limited hacked-together notes.
On a personal level, it also means that I'll be able to spend my time watching more of the goings-on around, like the people and places, which is frankly the main reason why I'm doing this. Maybe I'll enjoy the actual game more if I can keep my eyes on it rather than note-taking?
It may take some time to find my new 'voice' but I believe this is the better way to take this whole venture to the next level!
