NORVENMUNKI's COMMENTS
Tonight is Halloween. The streets of the Brockley Whins Estate are haunted by clusters of little ones in spooky costumes, brandishing their trick-or-treat loot and trailing in snakes behind dutiful parents dreaming of their sofa and a cuppa.
The local community around here are proudly warm and socially active, and this is clearly evidenced by the buzz around the Perth Green centre on this or any evening, with people of all ages enjoying the facilities and good company. From the gentlemen of the Perth Green Model Railway Club to the library users to the young dancers.
And, of course, Jarrow FC!
And, of course, Jarrow FC!
Recently, I read that during the summer the club's youth teams showed their generosity by donating old kit to youngsters in Abuja in Nigeria: so there are kids playing football there today in old Jarra strips! How cool is that?!
I arrive and park up. It's quite mild tonight after a few days of flash arctic freeze, so I probably won't be needing the scarf I brought. The car park is fairly busy, and there are football fans beginning to arrive, including some groundhoppers like myself.
Being a community centre, there's no boozer on-site here, so if you fancy a swift one then you could head to The Red Hackle, a large pub nearby that's a meeting point for the Hackle Hecklers, Jarra's own band of dedicated bluenoses. (Another great example of the local can-do spirit was how Lee Hughes of The Red Hackle was actually an independent Bede ward councillor until May this year).
Tonight's match is a second round tie in the League Cup. Currently, Jarrow and Thornaby are respectively fourth and third in the league; so two strong sides on good recent form... will this Halloween clash brew up a magic encounter?
Passing through the doors onto pitchside and the entry-keeper in his wee hut, everyone is very jolly and welcoming, as the two teams warm up pre-match.
The PA system blasts out music across the park and over the fencing into the dark sky, as a Metro trundles by towards Heworth. For now, the road noise from the A19 is inaudible but it will soon become the constant soundtrack.
The grass outfield is neatly mowed and well-kept.
I settle into the excellent covered stand, with 50 seats, all very clean and fully-maintained.
The whole place is spotless. An absolute gem!

The teams file out to Seven Nation Army: Thornaby are all in short sleeves.
Handshakes. Game on.
I'll let Mike Snowdon's excellent blog tell the story of the match itself.
In summary, it was 1-2 at half-time.

There's a tunnel that leads between the two community buildings. Up the slope, you can get a snack from the brilliant CA cafe. The friendly staff are very attentive and the selection on offer is massive and very reasonable.
It's lovely and warm inside too, although tonight is not that bad actually, you could certainly come in and thaw out on a harsh winter evening.

The second half is incident-packed: more goals, good efforts, tackles, bookings, sending-off. Game over: 1-4. Referee had a bit of a shocker. One of those nights.
Heading for home, the sound of fireworks crackles in the distance somewhere. There are no little witches or skeletons knocking on doors now, likely tucked in bed once the sugar-rush of candy had finally worn off... and let's hope those parents are indeed curled in sofas with well-earned cuppas at last.
The locals didn't get the result on the pitch tonight, but the good folk of Perth Green and hereabouts will continue to enjoy their footie and their busy community space, an oasis of warmth, light and camaraderie as the nights continue to draw in.
