NORVENMUNKI's COMMENTS

The Moore Lane complex is a kind-of hidden gem, nestled within a residential estate and tucked away on the outskirts, but is nevertheless easily visible from the main A167 that roars nearby.

Once you've navigated through the houses, you may be lucky to find a spot in the small on-site car park. However, on days like today when there are numerous visitors, the traffic spills out into the local estate. So please be respectful of access for the neighbouring residents, and allow a flow through the tight avenues.

On arrival, the Sports Club is popular, with cricket and rugby teams also sharing the site.
We walk around the rugby pitch; there's a match going on, so one can also watch that for free on your way round to the football area.

Everything here is very blue.
Even the people. By that, I mean they proudly sport the club colours.....not that they are melancholic!

The club staff/volunteers are all very friendly and there's a nice family atmosphere with lots of excited but courteous youngsters from the local kids' teams.

The sun is out, but there's a chilly breeze. Sitting in the shade of the stand is possibly the wrong strategy, without the benefit of at least a meagre helping of warming sunshine.

We assist a young lad who is carrying multiple snacks and drinks for himself and his mates; a very kind fella!

Some clouds roll by, dappling the intermittent sunshine into shadows across the turf. The wind settles for a bit.

Beyond the fences, the constant rumble of traffic on the A167 is always audible, with occasional roars of fast motorbikes tearing past.

The teams emerge and soon it's game on....and there's an early goal within a minute!
Great start! The locals are self-deprecatingly amazed!

After 15 minutes, the Blues double their lead. A fumbled shot wriggles through the disorganised Guisborough defence: 2-0.

Then, with 29 minutes played,  there's a penalty to Aycliffe. No dispute; clumsy tackle, but no card.
The big centre-forward steps up and thunders the kick into the low corner; although the keeper went the right way, he had no answer to the power of the shot.
3-0 within the first half-hour.

At the break, those in search of a pint pop to the Sports Club bar next door, out through the gate in the fence.

Instead, we get some food from the kiosk. The chips are good, but the hot chocolate is only graded average by my valued companion.

We decide to stand out in the sunshine for  the second half, so as to warm up our faces and legs.
The main stand is almost empty, except for one lady (wrapped in coats and blankets) and a cluster of several exuberant youngsters.

Guisborough get one back. The Aycliffe keeper tips a shot onto the crossbar and, following some scruffy pinball in the six-yard box, the visitors steal a tap-in.
3-1. And that's how the match ends.

Indeed, that's how 2018-19 ends!
The fixtures are exhausted and the summer break beckons. We'll be resuming our Quest when the new season resumes in August.
Until then, our memories of the lovely people of Newton Aycliffe will sustain us... and hopefully the summer weather will bless us all!
