NORVENMUNKI's COMMENTS

Arriving eastbound into Ryhope Colliery, along the main road - Tunstall Bank, I park up on the street and walk around into Recreation Park through the park gate. I head past the kids play area and the cricket pitch, and the football club is situated at the far end of the site, surrounded by the neighbouring housing estate.

There's no programmes available tonight, but I get the teamsheet. The ground has a large grass outfield, and a stand at one end which seats 100 spectators.

I make myself comfy here, amongst a small group; most people are happy to stand at various places.

The teams come out to a local favourite: 'I Predict A Riot' aka I predict a Ryhope. Is there a guide somewhere to football's musical puns?

The sun is low in the evening sky, and is in our faces for the first half. It's a pleasant late summer evening, and the sky is clear.

Tall nets protect the bungalows adjacent from the threat of stray footballs. The grassed area is busy with grandads and their little lads having a kickabout; it's a nice family atmosphere.

The half-time break arrives and it's goalless still. And, more relevantly for the Quest, hot chocolate-less too! There's no catering onsite tonight, so you have to go over to the cricket club. Personally, I don't have the inclination to go traipsing, thus I cannot report on the refreshments situation.

The floodlights begin to come on during the interval. There's a beautiful pink sunset away to the south over the perimeter tree line.

The teams are back out... or rather, Ryhope are back but we're still waiting for the officials and the visiting team. Finally they appear - just in time to interrupt Ed Sheeran on the PA.
The game restarts.

It's staring to get gloomy now, and the clear blue sky is inviting a chill.
With four minutes of the second half gone, an Olly Hodgkiss free-kick is not cleared by the hapless Consett defence, and the ball is scramble in. The Consett keeper is livid, his defenders somewhat sheepish: 1-0.

Much later, a defence-splitting pass from the busy Consett midfielder is driven in by thier ively forward: 1-1.

The crowd is dwindling as the night falls. It's got the feel of a game from much lower in the pyramid.

I just realised why the pitch boundary felt odd: there's almost no advertising hoardings around the railings, just a couple really, plus a lot of empty cable ties. Given the typical financial challenges at this level, a bit more local sponsorship would surely come in handy?

Then.... as the clock strikes 21:08... the floodlights go out!

After a couple of minutes of uncertainty, the PA announces that the lights will come back on in just one minute. The stragglers in the crowd hang back, waiting patiently; there are 11 minutes still to play, and the game is all-square.

Inevitably there are grumpy voices around me in the semi-darkness, and restless feet. It's seven minutes in the gloom and still no lights yet!

Then, after a mere eight minutes, hooray... the lights begin to flicker back on, slowly, one at a time.
By 21:20, the game restarts.

And we have a goal!! A cracker too! The Ryhope sub jiggles inside from the left and unleashes a pearler of a right-footed stormer.
For those of us who've been patiently standing around in the dark, it's something to repay our commitment: 2-1.

Ryhope are buzzing now. It's as if the electricity restart has re-energised them too. The PA announces Olly as man-of-the-match.
Game over: home win. The cheers from the CW changing room ring round, but high-flying Consett will have to pick themselves up for next time.

It's been a longer than expected evening trip.... and I still never had a hot chocolate!
