NORVENMUNKI's COMMENTS

Today's weather:
dry, cloudy, mild

NorvenMunki's Diary...

Coming into Borough Park, you get a eyeful of sporting history. The snaking footpaths up to the corrugated sheeting echo with the clumping of generations of loyal boots, and the fabric of the structure whistles with memories of yesteryear.

Today, the club is still a pillar of the local community and much-loved. But recent times have been stressful: only last week, Cumbria County Council issued a notice on safety concerns which caused the previous game to be postponed.
The chatter on the stands is preoccupied with survival rumour. The programme notes and the club website share the news and views of those closely involved in the situation.

There's absolutely loads of capacity here. The massive covered stands/terraces are impressive, with space enough for a mass of spectators under cover.

The bar is thriving and spirits are high. Despite the situation off the field, the team are flying high currently and regularly sit atop the League.

At half-time, I wander over to the west side to sample the coffee-and-smoothie wagon, 'Bean on the Scene'. A belting hot chocolate! Not tasted anything better as far as I can recall.

Game over: 2-0.

As I exit, another chance for some photos and to breathe in a lungful of the bracing Cumbrian air with its scent of sea-salt and footballing heritage. Long may this corner of England enjoy the latter.
