NORVENMUNKI's COMMENTS

Today's weather:
Several seasons in one afternoon: chilly, very strong winds, mostly cloudy with sunny bursts, turning from occasional rain into lashing swirls of a biblical tempest!

NorvenMunki's Diary...

It's a rough old weekend weather-wise, with the rage of Storm Jorge due to blow in at any moment. Yet the indomitable spirit of the footie fan cannot be extinguished with a bit of a breeze, and club volunteers have worked tirelessly to ensure this match is very much on! Great work all!

Marine is a proud club celebrating its 125th anniversary.

At time of writing, an extensive improvement programme is in progress, at no small cost. The old wooden buildings are being replaced with shiny new units: excellent, clean and functional.

One of their traditional nicknames is 'The Lilywhites', a nod to their usual white kit. However, in celebration of their anniversary, a short-term kit change to gold-and-black applies for this season only.

In recent times, the team has suffered a bit of a dip on the pitch, with a recent relegation for the first time in four decades, but as a club their pride is undimmed as ever and this anniversary year is a good excuse for a reboot. Indeed, the team's current form is pretty good and they're in the chasing pack looking to bounce back up to the NPL Premier.

There's a great initiative of offering reduced entry for season-ticket holders of Liverpool, Everton and Tranmere, so to encourage fans of the regional pro clubs to pop down and support their local side. The same offer extends to groundsharing partners, AFC Liverpool. I always salute any great idea to encourage new footfall and spread the non-league spirit a bit!

The ground is tightly snug within the neighbourhood housing estates. The prospect of lost balls into gardens is obvious, and thus the numbers of adjacent gardens are marked-off around the perimeter fencing so that the ball-boys/girls can better identify which front door to go and knock on to get the balls back!

The club has a great community-based feel all round. Today is 'No More Knives' day to raise awareness of weapons in the streets and to support hardworking campaigners running in this year's London Marathon. Whilst, on a different aspect entirely, there's a celebratory minute's applause in memory of club stalwart Frank Heald.
Behind the scenes, the club boasts Sir Kenny Dalglish as its Patron and over the decades has boasted numerous players who went on to other footballing roles (eg, for a Wigan Latics' fan like me, that notably includes Paul Cook!).

Today, the ground is filling up nicely around me, with over five hundred braves souls defying the atrocious weather. And despite the wintry conditions, an indicator of the coming of a Spring is evident from hundreds of tiny daffodil heads blooming in the slithers of outfield along the wings!

The ladies from Spoilies are battling stoically in the Snack Bar, despite a pre-match electrical fault throwing all their prep into chaos. On a day like today, the need for hot drinks is all the more desperate!

The match itself is an admirable contest in the face of meteorological fury!

Many times the high balls are tossed dismissively by the winds, and the timing of aerial challenges is especially difficult. But the two teams are sincere and wholehearted, and a good afternoon's footie is not ruined by the elements.
In the end, the home side run out 3-1 winners and the locals can cheer a vital three points in their quest to hang on in the play-off slots.

My own Quest here is done, and it's been well worth the trip.
A lovely example of what a community club can bring: focus, civic pride, camaraderie and pulling together all generations in a mutual support network. I wish them well in all their endeavours.
And RIP Frank: your club does you proud.
