NORVENMUNKI's COMMENTS
Today's weather:
dry, light clouds with sunny spells, chilly in coastal wind
NorvenMunki's Diary...
Happy New Year!
This is the first Quest of 2020. It's a dry day but the chill blowing on from the North Sea cuts under my coat and freezes the small of my back.
The main car-park onsite is full, so the overflow is already filling up. Myself, I park in a public car-park off-street three minutes walk away.
As I arrive, at first I inadvertently go in through the season-ticket holders' entrance! Realising my mistake, I go back out again and re-enter properly up the flagged steps to the turnstile box.

The picket fence around the pitch is cute, and there is evidence all over that the ground is slowly being updated.

The Tin Shed has a curious row of seats embedded in wooden bases, looking not unlike a communal public commode. Maybe they have some old-fashioned customs hereabouts that I'm not privy too?
I pop back down to where I mistakenly first came in, and grab a piping hot chocolate from "Neil's Kabin".
I am conscious that there's music over the PA system, and later team announcements as the players walk on, but from anywhere other than the entrance area it's kind of hard to hear anything. Maybe something to be remedied in the ongoing re-furb?

There's a tall line of spruce trees along the southwest corner, and back gardens surrounding to the east and south. During the match, balls inevitably go over and at least two into the same garden. The stands and club buildings are all along the north edge.
The game itself is lively; good endeavour and skill on show. An early goal for the visitors is disallowed (rightly!) for offside; it was entirely preventable, the enthusiasm of the striker overriding his spacial awareness. They may yet rue squandering that early initiative.
There's loads of noise constantly throughout the game, drifting across from the Mike Findlay MBE Stand. It turns out that this is the work of just two young lads! Brilliant effort guys!
Half-time score:

Early in the second half, Marske take the lead in controversy. Brighouse are incensed, claiming a hand-ball but the referee and linesman discuss and decide the goal is good.

Half-time score:

Early in the second half, Marske take the lead in controversy. Brighouse are incensed, claiming a hand-ball but the referee and linesman discuss and decide the goal is good.
Aggrieved, Brighouse are spurred by the injustice. Within minutes, their attempt at an equaliser is headed off the Marske goal-line. End to end stuff!
Inevitably, Brighouse do find their equaliser a few minutes later: a sidefoot from the edge of the box through a forest of defenders' legs creeps into the bottom corner as the grounded keeper grasps at air.
All square: game on.
The sun drops and the chill of the wind cuts deeper in the encroaching gloom.

Just after the hour mark, a fine goal from Marske restores their lead. Late on, a third should seal it. A long-range rocket from the Brighouse full-back cannons back off the crossbar in the dying moments, with the home keeper admitting that he didn't even see it.
Too little too late for the away side, though. If only they had taken that early lead after all?
It's a bit dark on the steps out past the ticket hut. The older blokes around me are descending the flight extra-carefully; they probably could benefit from a bit more lighting, I'd suggest?

All in all, a nice atmosphere and an impressive improving ground.
