THE QUEST STATS
Quest Venue ID = #76
Today is visit #11 at Step 4
Today's round trip: 276 miles [444 km]
Total distance so far on this Step (Step 4): 1971 miles [3172 km]
Today's weather: raining turning to monsoon, chilly, light-to-moderate breeze
NorvenMunki's Diary...
On arrival, I occupy one of the last remaining spaces in the adjoining car park; meaning I don't have to walk too far in the rain. I brought a scarf, hat and gloves but leave them in the car like a muppet!
There's torrential rain just before kick-off. The pitch is pretty cut-up but playable, in true non-League style. By the end of the game, the six-yard box will be a muddy bog. The grounds staff will have their work cut out for the upcoming game at the weekend.
The ground is close to the centre of town, surrounded by houses, with tall tatty netting on the northern end boundary. There's no such netting along the western side and at least one ball is hoofed clear over the concrete fence into the gardens beyond.
There's absolutely loads of capacity here. The three large covered stands/terraces are impressive, with space enough for well over a thousand spectators under cover.
The Social Club, standing in the southeast corner of the ground, boasts an upper storey with a Function Room to hire that has an outdoor balcony overlooking the pitch. Not really appropriate tonight, but no doubt a great vantage-point on a pleasant day.
Understandably on such a chilly wet night, the Snack Bar is doing a brisk trade in pie+chips combos and bovril-with-pepper.
Game on...
The rain eases off temporarily during the first half. By the break, you'd be forgiven for convincing yourself that it's going to be relatively dry and pleasant henceforth.
The local kids are full of voice early on, trying to create an atmosphere. By midway through the first half they've sensibly retired for some warmth. They'll re-emerge later with renewed enthusiasm.
Half-time: 0-2.
The visitors, looking to leapfrog their promotion rivals and regain top-spot in the table tonight, have dominated play and hold a two-goal cushion. It's been a long journey down in dreadful weather: will it be worth it?
Time for a hot chocolate. Warming; maybe more hot than chocolate, but nonetheless much appreciated by my chilly hands and lips.
The game restarts. It's light rain now with a gentle breeze: quintessential wintry evening football weather!
The crowd, home and away fans, is more subdued. Another goal for the visitors early on kills any hope of a home comeback. Another follows later.
With around five minutes left, the heavens open again! An absolute monsoon whips in, soaking everyone and everything.

Before the deluge...

I'm dry, high up in the William Pace Stand; but my fingers are getting numb as I type this!
Game over: 0-4.
At the close of day, the shivering local crowd trudges away through the dreary evening. The away fans have three new points to cherish, putting them back atop the league. A long trip back to Cumbria will be all the sweeter.
